DBS Marina Regatta 2017 @ The Promontory at Marina Bay

From 1 to 4 June 2017, Singapore’s Biggest BayFest, of DBS Marina Regatta (DBSMR) has returned with high-octane thrills and spills on land and water.  The regatta will be packed with a slate of unmissable activities for the outdoor enthusiasts, fitness lovers and partygoers alike from day to night, while watching the region’s top dragon boating teams battle it out against the iconic Marina Bay skyline for Asia’s highest prize purse of SGD 134,000. This year, see the debut of Singapore’s largest giant inflatable water obstacle course and Singapore’s largest interactive art dome to induce new & unique experience.

Jointly organised with the Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA), this year’s international dragon boat competition will see an estimated 90 teams and more than 3,000 athletes gathering on the waters of Marina Bay to compete for cash prizes totalling SGD 134,000 – the highest for the sport in Asia.

Eventgoers will get the chance to experience sailing in the Bay during the regatta with DBS’ 18-metre tall Swedish Match 40 sailboats – the first of its kind in Asia. The sailboats, debuted in 2015 as part of the DBS Marina
Bay Sailing Programme, has been offering the public complimentary sailing sessions in the Bay since 2013.

This year also sees the regatta partnering up with electronic music festival behemoth Ultra, urban fitness brand lululemon, Bali’s famed beach club Potato Head and F&B curators The Local People.

* Battle Bay
This years' regatta sees the debut of Singapore’s biggest inflatable water obstacle course, spanning over 11,000 square feet (some 1,100 square metres), featuring nine challenging obstacles to navigate including balance blocks, monkey bars, wall scaling, and rope swings.

* Bay Beach
This year, the pop-up urban beach returns bigger & better, double in size from last year. Bali beach club Potato Head will be bringing in their legendary Coconut Bar here for the first time, complete with their signature uber fresh coconut cocktails and beers.

* Bay Dome
This year will see the installation of two majestic nine- and 7.5-metre tall domes at the regatta. Reaching a height of 7.5 metres, the Bay Dome will offer an immersive interactive art experience – Singapore’s largest – with an illustrated projection of the Marina Bay skyline. Eventgoers can customise their own characters and have their designs come to life on the projection to create an ever-evolving digital canvas.

* Bay Eats
For foodies, the regatta’s food village Bay Eats, will be curated by The Local People and feature food stalls from award-winning and the top new eateries in town such as the “Neo-Sin” restaurant Labyrinth, French eatery Garçons, The BellJar, Leng Leng ice cream and more.

* Play Dome 
The nine-metre-tall Play Dome will host many of the fitness classes launched by lululemon during the day. At night, the DBSMR X Ultra Countdown Party will take place exclusively at the regatta from 7pm to 10pm, on Friday and Saturday evening (2 & 3 June).

A Taste of Authentic Indonesian Food at Ayam Penyet RIA, Bedok Mall

I bet most of you should be familiar with Penyet Ayam Ria.  The name may not ring a bell for some but once I mention the Penyet Ayam Restaurant at Lucky Plaza, majority will easily point out the one that have outlets at both Level 1 & 4 of Lucky Plaza. The Ayam Penyet is an authentic Indonesia recipe passed down by the owners' grandma.

Are you aware that apart from Lucky Plaza, Ayam Penyet Ria actually have other outlets in other parts of Singapore? I wasn't aware then, until I was invited to a food tasting at the Bedok Mall outlet.

The Ayam Penyet Ria branch at Bedok Mall can be conveniently located at level 1, just opposite of Starbucks Cafe.  What caught my eyes, are the numerous bird cages hanging at the ceiling of the restaurant.

We started off the meal with starters like kerupuk Udang and Emping (Prawn Crackers)
Jamur Enoki (FriedEnoki Mushrooms), and Kulit Ayam (Chicken Skin). You definitely need to dip the prawn crackers into the sambal belacan to eat.  Spicy, but there's only one word to describe the feeling, shiok!

The enoki mushroom, stays crunchy despite being lightly battered.  So far, it is the most lightly battered ones that I've tried...

Once you start munching the fried chicken skin, you just can't stop!  As you munch, you can hear the "crackling" sound.

Next, we are served with Tahu Telor which is fried egg and tofu with peanut sauce.  I generally prefer savoury dish, so I wish for the sauce to be less sweet.  However, undeniably, the peanut sauce has a very nice aroma. FYI, most of the sauces and spices are imported from Indonesia to provide the authentic taste of Indonesia.

How can one miss their Signature dish - Ayam Penyet (Smashed Fried Chicken) when stepped into Ayam Penyet Ria? The delectable ayam penyet, served with fried bean curd, tempeh (processed soy food) and kang kong (water spinach), is enjoyable with a bowl of fragrant rice and the sambal belacan.

However, Ayat Penyet Ria does not only serve ayam penyet but also ikan penyet - 
Ikan Gurame Penyet (Smashed Gurame fish), Lele Penyet (Smashed Catfish) and Bawal Penyet (Smashed Pomfret). Love the deep fried gurame fish is, the entire fish is fried till so crispy that you can even eat up the finer bones. The catfish is rather meaty, but I prefer the pomfret to it due to the natural sweetness of the pomfret fish.

The Es Campur is basically Ice Mixed Fruits, with most ingredients similar to the Ice Kachang, but served without condense milk and with added cempedak.  However, I think I will prefer it to serve with condense milk like the Ice Kachang. I will recommend you to try the Jus Alpukat (Indonesia Avocado Juice) instead as it has a rich and creamy taste, but I secretly hope that it will be less sweet.

The Lava Boy and Lava Girl is pretty much colourful soda drinks, greatly instagrammable. Personally, I prefer the Lava Boy that is more refreshing.

Portico Host - a Hidden Gem in Alexandra

Portico Host (formerly known as Hosted on the Patio) is nestled among the commercial buildings along Alexandra Road.

Be welcomed by its lovely garden and sprawling alfresco space when you stepped into Portico Host.  A lovely venue where one will enjoy chilling out with families and friends over some drinks.  Seemingly, a hidden gem among the commercial buildings.

In fact, the main dining hall area is of such homely feel that one finds it a cozy venue to dine in with families and friends, a great venue for catching up.

The Portico Host has recently revamped its menu.  Starters served include, Duo Crab & Trio of Skin.

The Duo Crab is a delighting dish, filled with elements of surprise. Deep fried baby crabs, so crispy that you can eat it on its own or with the edible soil which is actually of salted egg. Dip your fried mantou into the chili mud crab meat dip but it would have score better if the spicy level of the dip is slight raised.

The Trio of skin includes deep fried eel skin and pork floss, chicken skin with host seasoning and the pork skin crackling. These are great snacks that goes well with the beer or on themselves! My personal favourite got to be the fried chicken skin which is so crispy and flavourful that I couldn't stop helping myself with it.

Next come the main courses.

The freshness of the hottate (scallop) matters most when comes to dishes like Hotatte Tattaki. The fresh scallops, pan seared till golden brown and topped with mentaiko, apple slaw, avrugu caviar and crispy kawa ebi, is a different take from the usual salted pan seared scallop, with a burst of flavours!

The Grilled Octopus is certainly not the dish for me as I have never really fancy eating octopus.  However, undeniably, the plating is beautiful and the Sous-vide potatoes chunks taste awesome!

I was never a fan of Chicken Breast, but the Seared Chicken Breast surprisingly, is my second favourite among the variety of main courses! Tender and succulent, the chicken breast manages to retain the moisture and tasted juicy! The is the dish that I will highly recommend to the health conscious eaters!  Healthy, yet taste is not compromised.

The Snapper Pie is the top choice among all. The dish is simply toothsome!  The snapper fillet is very fresh and of generous serving, the combination with wild mushroom ragout, asparagus, tomato and a hint of truffle oil is simply amazing and I thought I'm having a snapper fillet in mushroom soup pie!

The beef lovers should go for the 72 Hour Braised Angus Beef Cheek. After braised for 72 hours, the beef cheek remains tender and delectable. There is certainly no complains even for someone like me who hardly eat beef.

The BBQ Pork rib, with a tangy BBQ sauce, is tenderly grilled and can be easily cut into pieces. The portion is huge, thus, it is recommended to share if you are a small eater.

The Duck Leg Confit, sitting on top of potato mash, purple cabbage stew, red pepper coulis, is drizzled with Port wine sauce, is also succulent dish. Love its crispy duck skin.

Lastly, we are served the Pineapple dessert, Kaya Cream Brulee and Tiramisu, and ended the meal with a sweet note!

The all pineapple dessert consists of pineapple & rubbed crumber, dehydrated pineapple slices and pineapple sherbet.  The presentation reminds you of a garden, however, it is too sweet for my liking while the sorbet is too sour for me too.

The flower pot of Tiramisu sits on the bed of edible soil, made up of mashed Oreo cookies. It can hardly go wrong by ordering the Tiramisu here.

Love Cream Brulee? Then you should give it a try to the Kaya Cream Brulee. A fusion dessert with local flavour - Kaya. On a side note, it is on the sweeter side, so this may not suit the taste of those who does not have a sweet tooth.

The overall dining experiences at the Portico Host restaurant was great.  The cozy settings and the friendly staff made me feel at home.  I've enjoyed most of the dishes, of which, dishes that I highly recommend are -- the Duo Crab, Hotatte Tattaki, Seared Chicken Breast, Snapper Pie and the Kaya Cream Brulee.
