Review: Ambi Climate 2nd Edition by Ambi Labs

Today, most Singaporeans can't live without an air conditioner (AC), which is ranked #1 as compared among other modern conveniences, such as a fan, WiFi or even our beloved smart phone, in a survey that just conducted last year end. In fact, result is same for all countries surveyed, including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and the United States.

One common issue faced by the AC users are,  they are often feeling too cold in the middle of the night due to fluctuation of our body’s temperature and the external temperature, affecting one's sleep quality.

So how can we tackle this situation?

Ambi Climate, an award-winning AI-enabled smart air con control device by Ambi Labs, which is launched via Kick Starter since 2014, seems to be the solution for this.  3 years later in 2017, the Ambi Labs came up with the improved 2nd Edition.

Being in a family that heavily depends on air conditioner daily, I happily jumped at the chance to review the Ambi Climate 2nd Edition.

Features
The Ambi Climate 2nd Edition basically comes with 5 different modes of control:
  • Comfort Mode - Learns your preferences. Uses A.I. techniques to learn and analyze your feedback about your comfort in different climate conditions and different times via the comfort status bubble and adjust the air conditioner settings accordingly to deliver optimal temperature.

  • Temperature Mode - Allows you to set a target temperature which Ambi Climate will adjust the settings to maintain this temperature, taking into account how both your room environment and the performance of your air conditioner are affected by climate changes.

  • Away Mode - Allows you to set a threshold temperature / humidity of your room when you are away.  Ambi Climate’s AI will switch on the AC only when it is needed to maintain the threshold.
  • Manual Mode - Allows you to control your AC through the Ambi Climate app, similar to using the AC remote.
  • Off Mode - Switches off your AC
There are also options for you to set timer to automatically switch on or switch off your air conditioner at a particular time and day of the week.

For myself, I personally love the Comfort Mode, reason being, at times, despite same air conditioner temperature, I may feel differently due to the fluctuation in surrounding temperature, humidity and body temperature. I realized that after a few days of feedback on my comfort level, the Ambi Climate AI has managed to analyze and adjust the AC temperature and settings accordingly, to tailor to my comfort level, so there's no more need to wake up in the middle of the night to adjust my AC settings.

From the app, you can retrieve your usage history in daily, weekly or monthly format.

You can also retrieve your deployment which show the log file of using the Ambi Climate.

What I like most are the insights of using the Ambi Climate, which includes:
  • AC Run Time (which is not of real importance to me, but may applicable to people who like to monitor their average usage hours)

  • Average AC Set Points

  • Temperature and Humidity which compares the room average temperature & humidity vs outdoor average temperature & humidity.

  • Mode Usage - The different modes of adjusting AC used, as the data clearly shown, I love using Comfort mode

  • Comfort Feedback Learned - As you can see from the cluster, despite being in the same temperature, I may feel differently, which the surrounding temperature and humidity play a part in affecting my comfort level.

  • Importance of Comfort Factors - These are defined based on my feedback, which obviously, weather and indoor humidity impact me most.

Is the Ambi Climate worth buying?
I have not used the Ambi Climate long enough to see if it really helps to save the electricity bill, moreover, we have 3 rooms that run on air conditioner daily so the results may not be so obvious.  The Ambi Climate is supposed to automatically adjust your air conditioner to reach optimum temperature without the need to always keep your air conditioner at  24°C or even below. From the insights, the average AC Set Points of my room is an average of 29.3°C, I am rather convinced that it does help to cut down power consumption and help to save on bills for long run.

One thing for sure is, it does improve my sleep quality as no more needing to wake up in the middle of the night, to adjust the air conditioner temperature due to too cold / too warm.

I will recommend using the Ambi Climate, which acts more than just a remote device to on/off your air conditioner, the AI function to auto adjust the temperature surely brings convenience and better experience in using the air conditioner.
