To consume milk at its freshest, it should be bought in quantities that mirror the household’s consumption level. Perhaps the solution lies in buying, for example, two 1-litre packs of milk instead of a 2-litre pack so that the smaller opened pack of milk can be consumed within three days.
As widely acknowledged fact, milk nourishes the body with goodness that supports bone health, enhances muscular performance and improves heart health. In Singapore, milk undergoes pasteurisation to kill pathogenic bacteria that may lead to food poisoning. Pasteurised milk, however, can be easily contaminated once opened. It is important to understand how to safely handle and store milk and drink it fresh get to the best out of this nutrition-laden creamy beverage.
There are many ways and tips to keeping and consuming milk fresh. They all start with preserving the cold chain from the time the milk leaves the production facility to the stores and then to the homes of its consumers. It is recommended that milk or dairy products be picked up last when shopping so that they do not warm up as consumers continue to shop. Upon reaching home, the milk should be refrigerated right away and stored at temperatures between 2°C and 4°C.
Smart shoppers would refer to the ‘use-by’ date as an estimate as to when milk remain fresh and safe for consumption. While this date indicates how long an unopened carton of milk retains its freshness and quality, once it is opened, this date is no longer valid. When opened, milk is exposed to bacteria and begins to lose its quality and freshness rapidly, thus, it is important to finish the pack of milk within three days of opening, as recommended by Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).
