[Food Review] AOne Claypot House @ Kallang Wave Mall

Sponsored Post

AOne Claypot Porridge may not be a stranger to many.  Established since 2008, they have about 30 stalls across major food courts in Singapore.  However, are you aware that they have actually branched into dining restaurants. Their very first casual dining restaurant – Aone Claypot House, is opened at Bukit Panjang Plaza in 2012.  Since then, they have grown into 9 restaurants with plans to expand further, up to 20 more outlets. Their 10th outlet will be opening at Suntec City this end April 2015.

AOne Claypot House chain of restaurants, are usually decorated with natural woody interiors and warmth light fixtures, lending a cozy and homey vibe where everyone feel ease at home during dining. Thus it is great venue for family bonding over the meal.

In additional, AOne Claypot House is also very focus on Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) efforts if you have read my previous post.  They are also planning into year-long collaborations with various charity organizations.  So when patronizing the restaurants, you are indirectly contributing to social responsibilities. Do a good deed when enjoying your meal, why not?

One may wonder what is the edge of having their dishes cooked over claypot. Claypot have good airflow and heat insulation, thus locking all the moisture and nutrients in while cooking.  This cooking process results in more tender and juicier meats, as well as a richer taste to the dish. Besides, claypot cooking uses less oil yet retains its natural flavours, which is a great news to the health conscious ones.

So what does AOne Claypot house got to offer?  While their stalls in food courts offer mainly porridge only, their restaurants offers an extensive range of claypot dishes and Chinese cuisine, apart from porridge.  Here’s sharing my food review from my previous 2 visits in the tasting sessions @ Kallang Wave Mall branch:

The Dried Scallop Porridge with Minced Meat and Assorted Eggs (Egg, Salted Egg and Century). The 3 types of eggs generally are of different taste and texture, therefore, every mouthful gives you a different taste.Even for me who do not eat century eggs, can't help having more (less the century egg) as the porridge is simply flavourful.

The Premium Dried Scallop Porridge is AOne's signature porridge and uses scallops, fresh slices of fish and cuttlefish that give the porridge a natural sweet taste. Thumbs up!

All the claypot porridge are generally flavoursome, so no additional condiments needed to enhance the taste.  The natural sweetness from the dried scallops are tasty enough.

The aroma from the Claypot Sesame Oil Chicken lingers in the air and is simply irresistible.  I like that the chicken itself is well-marinated and that the taste of sesame oil is totally immersed into the dish.  According to what I understand, a few additional drops of sesame oil are added after the dish is cooked as during the cooking process, part of the sesame oil may have evaporated, this explains why the dish not only taste but smell good.  The gravy goes well with the porridge, making one very appetising.

The Premium Claypot consists of Abalone Mushroom, Scallop, Sliced Fish, Prawn, Fish Maw. Loads of wholesome ingredients, fresh, but it may taste bland for some.  In fact, most of us at the table, prefer the Claypot Fish Maw with Crab Meat Thick Soup. The thick broth with gooey texture gives a resemblance to shark fins soup.  If only we could drop a few drips of vinegar to it, it will definitely enhance the taste!

Who doesn't like the nutritious herbal chicken?  The Steamed Chicken with Wolf berries and Chinese Angelica Root is flavoursome without the Chinese angelica root overpowering the taste.  The wolf berries has enhanced the natural sweetness of the dish, making the broth tasty.

The Deep Fried Cod Fish with Dark Soy Sauce is definitely a hot favourite among all. The Cod Fish, deep fried to golden brown, is crispy on the skin but is soft on the inside. The fish meat melts in your mouth, the taste is just heavenly without being too saltish. Sauce is great to go with the porridge.

Love salted egg? Try the Deep Fried Big Prawns and Deep Fried Fish with Creamy Salted Egg Sauce.  However, unlike the conventional type of deep fried salted egg dishes, the creamy salted egg sauce have a totally different texture, sort of grainy and powdery. It is much less salty with a faint salted egg taste, not my type of love though, probably suits better for the health conscious. I prefer the Deep Fried Prawns with Creamy Butter Sauce, and prefer my salted egg dishes to be of similar texture and of a stronger taste.

Eggplant (brinjal)!??!! I don't usually eat eggplant due to its soft and sticky texture, not even for tempura.  But I was told that this is a MUST TRY, so I decided to try it out by sharing half a piece with my sister.  Unknowingly, I picked up a second piece. The Fried Eggplant with Pork Floss is surprisingly one of my favourite dish. The Eggplant was deep fried till crispy, yet it managed to retains the moisture and sweetness of it. I totally don't think I'm eating eggplant, it should be pumpkin, they must have made a mistake?

The Assorted Vegetables in Sambal Sauce, or better known as the Four Heavenly Kings, is an assortment of wholesome greens – eggplant, french bean, long bean, and lady finger, stir-fried with minced meat in sambal chilli sauce.  It is of delectable, certainly goes well with the porridge.

Chai Po Omelette is a common dish, but have you tried chai po omelette with pork floss?  A clever way of combining both sweet and savoury taste.

Some find the Fish Maw stuffed with Minced Meat in Fish Roe Sauce a bit too bland, but I find it just right as this is supposed to be something light, to allow you to taste the natural sweetness of the fresh ingredients.

After a meal, some tea will be be great.  We tried the premium flower tea that lets out a faint aroma of rose and served in beautiful transparent tea pot and glasses. If you are not a tea person, you can go for sodas or barley drinks.
