[Musical Review] Let's Bo Bo Cha Cha with Great World Cabarets

The Great World Cabaret 《综艺大世界》 is a first ever collaboration between RWS and Singapore’s leading theatrical company, Dream Academy, featuring top local talents in performing arts.

The Great World is headlined by a different stand-up local comedian every week, including Mark Lee 李国煌, Hossan Leong 梁荣耀, Judee Tan 陈映奇 and “Broadway Beng” Sebastian Tan 陈瑞彪, and complemented by an illusionist, dancing girls, singers, acrobats and more.

This entertaining live theatrical variety show is created by prolific local comedienne, Selena Tan 陈美廩, founder of Dream Academy and best known for popular productions including The Dim Sum Dollies®, Broadway Beng® and The Hossan Leong Show. The Great World Cabaret is set to take audiences back to the exuberant “Bo Bo Cha Cha” days of Singapore’s yesteryears, where dancing girls, comedians and acrobats would light up the stage with glitz and glee. The show features three home-grown legends who graced the stages of nightclubs and amusement parks across Singapore in its early years of independence - Rose Chan (played by Seong Hui Xuan 常惠旋); popular Malay folk singer, Kartina Dahari (played by Aisyah Aziz); and Singapore's reigning a-go-go and yodeling queen, Sakura Teng (played by Joanna Dong 董姿彦). Audiences can look forward to a blast from the past as they sing and tap along to familiar classics like《玫瑰玫瑰我爱你》, 《茉莉花》,Shake Shake Shake and Bunga Melur.

Synopsis
An old security guard closes up a museum exhibit for the night. The exhibit evokes long forgotten memories of his brightest moments as a host of Singapore’s most famous nightclub, the Great World Cabaret.

His memories take centre stage as the cabaret comes to life. Dancing girls, acrobats from all over the world, a magician, amazing singers and more fill the stage. Set against this loud and colourful backdrop, he meets the girl of his dreams.

At the climax of the cabaret show, his memories start to fade and he finds himself back at the museum, unsure if time had really gone backwards or if it was nothing more than an old man’s daydream.

Review
This year, Singapore is celebrating SG50 and the Great World Cabaret certainly brings back fond memories of the Great World Amusement Park / New World Amusement Park / Gay World Amusement Park to the older generation.  It also allows the younger generation to experience for themselves the past entertainment and leisure that their parents or grandparents used to have and considered as extravagant back then. I was totally astonished and captivated by  Kartina Dahari (played by Aisyah Aziz) when she sing the Chinese Folk song 《茉莉花》, her pronunciation is rather accurate too. When Joanna Dong 董姿彦 sings, her voice does hold a resemblance to the a-go-go and yodeling queen, Sakura Teng.  My mom used to a fan of Sakura Teng and I have heard quite a numbers of her songs during my childhood days.  The drunken sailors are pretty comical and entertaining.  The acrobatic stunts performed by the Qing Dao Acrobacticv Troup are pretty impressive too.  As usual, the local king, Mark Lee 李国煌, never failed to make us laugh aloud. However, I believe the other weeks’lined-up comedian such as Hossan Leong, Judee Tan and Sebastian Tan will be bringing you same enjoyment as they are just as great as a comedian as Mark Lee.  Thanks Samuel for inviting to this entertaining production!

Come, #LetsBoBoChaCha @ Resort World Sentosa!
