Navy@Vivo 2014: RSS Persistence

The Singapore Navy's landing ship tank (LST) - RSS Persistence will be at VivoCity Promenade from 29 May - 1 June for an openhouse as an initiative of Navy@Vivo 2014! However there is no sale of tickets, and visit are strictly by invitation or balloting.

One of the four LST, RSS Persistence (Warship 209).

I'm very honoured to be invited by the Singapore Navy as a blogger to attend a cocktail event on board RSS Persistence, which is one of the four warships owned by the Singapore Navy.

The Sunset Ceremony, or rather, Ceremonial Sunset is something that should not be missed.  It is a   ceremony that marks the end of a day, where sailors are decked in their full white No.1 uniforms and salute the lowering of the Ensign at sunset.  Even though this is the second time watching the Ceremonial Sunset, I still find it enjoyable.

Folding of the National Flag during the Sunset Ceremony / Ceremonial Sunset.

After the Ceremonial Sunset, Rear Admiral Ng Chee Peng, the Chief of Navy, made an opening speeach and made 3 toasts to all the guests.

The SWANs (Singapore Women's Auxiliary Naval Service) got a chance to take a group photo with The Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Ng Chee Peng. The Swans is actually part of the Singapore division of the Malayan Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve back in the 50s and the 60s and they are the very first batch of Navy girls!

After the cocktail receiption, we were brought around by Captain Chong to tour around the RSS Persistence. Lots of phototaking, selfie and wefie as usual.

Walking down the aisle, you get to see the different flags of various countries.

Cozy Setting of the Wardroom, or rather, the recreation room.

After the tour, whatever we eaten earlier has been digested, and it's time to try out the Pizza Special by Chief Chef!
The Chief Chef with another Naval Chef presenting their Pizza creation!

The Bak Kwa (BBQ meat) with Bak Hu (meat floss) pizza, simply toothsome! Then crazy ideas came along, and LTC decided to promote for the Navy@Vivo open house on Kaman's hand!  This leads me to proposing an idea for stickers tatoos to be distributed out to the guests in future Navy@Vivo! ^_~

What's LTC Chew Up to?

End Product of LTC Chew's scribbling! Cool promoting ideas, isn't it?

We had a really enjoyable night and thank you Singapore Navy for the invite.

Revamped Food Junction @ Bugis Junction

Food Junction (福将坊) @ Bugis Junction had just gone through a makeover, boasting a clean-cut look.  The new Food Junction has also adopted the concept of an art market, endeavouring to be the first food hub that promotes good food, comfort and the appreciation of art in perfect unison.

The Revamped Food Junction (福将坊) @ Bugis Junction

Food Junction collaborated with The RICE Company Limited in the Art Walls, where art pieces of Singapore’s young and talented artists will be showcased, with new theme changed every 3 months. Net proceeds from the sale of these paintings will go The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT BAF) and The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (ST SPMF).

The Art Wall @ Food Junction, Bugis was launched on 11 May by Food Junction CEO Ms Teo Chew Hoon & Business Times Editor, Mr Alvin Tay.

Alvin Tay - Editor of The Business Times, Children-Artist, Ms Teo - CEO of Food Junction Holdings,
Michelle - Chief Creative officer of Auric Pacific and  Colin Goh - Board Member of Budding Artist Fund

The interior design of Bugis Food Junction takes the leap into a more leading-edge appearance and youthful feel with doodles on the walls.  Original designer chairs from Jasper Morrison and Robin Day, handicapped-friendly features, improved air ventilation, power points, stall directories and signage in the food court further enhanced dinner's experience.

Wall doodles can be found in different parts of the food court!

Cozy seats and settings enhance the diners' experience.

The acoustic ceiling, made of sound absorbing material reduces sound reflection makes Bugis Food Junction ideal for meetings too, other than casual dining.

Toast@Work is re-branded as Toast Junction and first unveiled in Bugis Food Junction’s Art Market.  With a brand new logo, and modernized & comfortable interiors, Toast Junction is now contemporary, chic and the new place for food lovers, serving nostalgic yet popular signatures such as traditional brown toasts with homemade kaya and butter, perfectly timed half-boiled eggs and its signature beehoon, served with a great selection of scrumptious ingredients.  New addition to the menu, include Mee Siam, Mee Rebus and the Curry Chicken that won't go wrong with a crispy loaf.

The revamped food court now houses a wide selection of local favourites, including popular nostalgic brands such as Aden Beef Noodles, Koo Kee Yong Tau Foo and the famous Capitol Puay Heng Minced Meat Noodles.

For someone who barely eats beef like me, the Odeon Beef Noodle taste really great.  The gravy is flavoursome and not overly starchy and the beef slices are tender.  The chilli sauce, cincaluk (fermented shrimp paste) and lime juice helps to add flavours to the original tasty noodles.

Odeon Beef Noodles

The Capitol Puay Heng Minced Meat Noodles, or more commonly known as the Bak Chor Mee by the locals is a variant from the usual Bak Chor Mee that we eat.  It comes with fried scallop imitation, fish dumplings (鱼饺 ) and fried dumpling.  The noodles are chewy and ingredients were fresh, love the well marinated mushrooms, but I personally prefer with more vinegar!

Capitol Puay Heng Minced Meat Noodles

Love the Opeh Leaf Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle is delectable, the moistness of the noodles is just nice and the presentation of the fried Hokkien Prawn Mee on the opeh leaf (乌芭叶) added a taste of nostalgic. The belachan chilli is spicy enough and adds in the kick when enjoying the dish!

Opeh Leaf Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle

Run by the same owner of the Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle Stall, the Bugis Soup Master offers a wide variety of double-boiled soup. We tried their special creation - Blissful.  The soup consists of chicken, wolf berries, and collagen-rich white fungus with almonds.  This soup is great for nourishment and is something I wouldn't mind going for a second round!

The Bugis Soup Master (Original)

The nourishing ingredients used in Blissful Soup

The BBQ Chicken is another hot favourite among all, crispy skin with juicy meat. Thumbs up!

BBQ Chicken Wings

Other than local delights, there are other cuisines available in Food Junction too.

You can try the Ayam Penyet, which literally means flat chicken in Malay.  The dish origins from Indonesia, and basically they use the sides of a chopper to literally flatten the fried chicken thigh or breast. It is good that the chicken breast isn't too dry but the tempeh (fried fermented soybean) isn't to my liking.  However, their real hot spicy chilli compensate for it!

Indonesia delights - Ayam Penyet

You can also go for the Japanese Bento set if you are yearning for Japanese flavours.  The Chicken and Salmon Bento side did not disappoint us.  Both the chicken and Salmon are crispy on the outer yet retaining the moistness.

The Chicken & Salmon Bento Set

There is also new kid on the block, Yogurberry.  Made with natural fruit sugars, Yogurberry, a Korean branded yogurt, is famous amongst Hollywood celebrities where you get to enjoy a good mix of flavours.  Read more about Yogurberry in my previous blog post here.

New Kid on the Block - YogurBerry!

Last but not least, thanks Jessie for extending the invite to me!
