[Musical Review] Beauty and the Beast Musical @ Mastercard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands
A tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, Beauty and the Beast... The tune still resonate in my mind after few days watching the musical and I simply can't help humming the tune from time to time.
Thanks to Samuel, I attended the opening night of the Beauty and the Beast Musical, which is a smash hit Broadway musical.
From the producers of The Lion King, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, an international sensation that has played to over 35 million people worldwide in 13 countries, is finally coming to Singapore! This new touring production has been put together by the original creators of the Broadway production, including the Tony Award®winning costumes from Ann Hould-Ward.
Beauty and the Beast is a story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is actually a young prince trapped within under a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will be broken and he will be able to transform to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity...

This classic musical is filled with dazzling production numbers including, "Belle", "Gaston', “Be Our Guest” and the beloved title song, composed by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman. New song titles with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Tim Rice are added in, so that it will not feel like an exact replication of the movie.
The moment Belle (cast by Hilary Maiberger) stepped onto the stage, it felt like Belle has walked out from the story book. Her crystal clear voice has deeply captivated me. But I can't help feeling Lefou has actually stolen some limelight with his comical acts and lines throughout the musical.
The act that I enjoyed most, got to be "Be Our Guest", where the enchanted utensils put up a whimsical dance, giving a big welcome to Belle, I was in fact enchanted by them.
The lightings is well-controlled which sets in the mood right at the very moment and the light projections are magically beautiful too. The lavish sets and colourful costumes attracted everyone's eyeballs, be it kids or adults. Children always fancy colourful stuff, and so are adults, how to resist such beautiful settings and costumes? The almost 3 hours musical is definitely worth catching!
Due to overwhelming responses, the play will be extended till 3 May 2015!
